1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet

1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet

The 1500 calorie diabetic diet provides you calories of not more than 1500 in a day. This kind of diet can be very important for the people who are suffering from diabetes because it goes a long way in helping them to control their blood sugar levels and weight.

The 1500 calorie diet contains good proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Since weight loss is very necessary for the people suffering from diabetes, it will have to be unbalanced with the number of calories that are burnt in the process of doing exercises.

When you are on the 1500 calorie diabetic diet, you will have to come up with a specific number of calories that you will want to unbalance each day.

For example, if you want to lose one pound in a week, you will have to unbalance the calorie scales by 500 calories. This can be achieved by reducing the calories intake by 500 and increasing the amount of calories to be burnt through exercise by 500.

When thinking about the menus to come up with, you must plan your meals around foods that are rich in nutrients. In the menu, ensure that you include fruits and high fiber vegetables, low- fat protein sources and whole grains. You should also remember to consult a doctor about the diet that you will be planning so that you do everything correctly.

A Good 1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet May Include The Following Menu

While administering this 1500 calorie diabetic diet, you must consider the energy requirements of your body.

For breakfast, you may have a slice of whole grain bread with one spoonful of almond butter.  For protein you may include a boiled egg. Ensure that you eat one orange. Complete the breakfast by taking a cup of plain tea as beverage. This is a balanced diet that should be encouraged. It is not a must that you stick to this menu; you may have alternatives but ensure that it is a balanced diet.

Your lunch may include three slices of whole grain toast bread to represent the carbohydrate group, a slice of Swiss cheese and fish on the protein group and a cup of chopped carrots to stand for the vitamins. A cup of milk may be taken as a beverage. Once more, these foods may be changed to provide a variety and reduce boredom so that the trend of the 1500 calorie diabetic diet may continue.

For dinner, ensure that you have a similar menu as the one for lunch. The meal need to be a balanced diet. You may choose to have different foods from the ones that have been mentioned above as long as all the food groups have been represented.

When it comes to this type of diet there are two different approaches that should be considered in order to reach your targeted goal.
  • Diabetic Exchange System
This first method of losing weight works by organizing your meals into 6 different categories: the starch groups, the non-starchy vegetable group, the milk group, the fat group the fruit group and the meat and meat substitutes group.

Foods that come from the same exchange group have the exact same amount of protein, calories, carbohydrate and fat as all the other aliments in that specific group. That means foods that come from the same exchange group can easily be replaced with each other. For instance you may replace a small orange with a small apple.
  • Carbohydrate Counting Approach
This method is an alternative offered by the 1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet and it pretty much resembles the Diabetic Exchange System in terms of including food groups in their program. The difference stands in the fact that you rely on counting or keeping track of servings that equal 15 grams or one carbohydrate unit. Here is a list with the groups of foods that contain carbohydrate:
  1. The Starch and the Starchy Vegetables Group.
  2. The Milk Group.
  3. The Fruit Group.

In other words, a single carbohydrate unit is composed of one serving from any of the three groups mentioned above. For instance, if you decide to have breakfast consisting in two slices of toast with butter and a glass of milk that measures 8 ounce, you should count not one, but three units of carbohydrate.

The thing that differentiates the two methods belonging to the 1500 Calorie Diabetic Diet is that the number of fats and proteins in foods is no longer taken into consideration, which means that if you consume buttered toast at breakfast it wouldn’t be counted as butter is a part of the so called fat group therefore not containing carbohydrate.

A 1500 calorie diabetic diet is very suitable and effective because it limits the intake of all the three groups of foods and therefore ensures that the amount of calories that get into the body just enough. It will be also very important to restrict yourself from eating the highly processed and refined food. They are harmful and may work against your diet plan. Finally, make it a routine practice to take a lot clean water. Good luck
